Across Edinburgh we’ve been renting out our Canon 5D mk3 and to further improve our rental service we now have 3 Canon 5D mark 3 cameras. We considered the benefits of the Canon C100 and the Black Magic Cinema Camera, however we think this is the best camera, certainly for our own needs. For us it means having three cameras with – no word of a lie – the best low-light performance of any camera in the world.
Using brand new 64GB CF cards we now also have the capacity to record RAW for commercial and documentary films. Sadly the cost for doing so for wedding films and other event films remains too prohibitive to make it a viable option – for the time being. We shoot hours and hours of footage, and at current prices it costs about £10 / minute to shoot RAW footage to the cards, meaning we’ll only use it where the situation really warrants it.
Shooting cinematic RAW video provides a number of advantages, including a wide dynamic range which opens up the ability to correct the image far more extensively in post production to craft the look and feel of the film. Using DaVinci Resolve software we’re able to craft our most cinematic films yet.
The higher bit rate means writing down more information faster – which results in a better looking picture. Magic Lantern‘s software also provides extra focus and exposure tools as well as allowing us to shooting 1080p RAW.
2014 is going to be a big year for us as we seek out more documentary and commercial work to busy ourselves with and we’d welcome people to reach out to us with their projects – personal or commercial.
